When most people these days hear the name Sam Raimi, they
think of the Spiderman trilogy or the
upcoming Oz the Great and Powerful,
but if you are a horror movie fan, you know him for such great films as The Evil Dead, Evil Dead II, Army of
Darkness and his venture back into the horror realm Drag Me to Hell.
On April 5th, a remake, revisioning or what ever you would like to call it of the film Evil Dead is hitting theaters. Raimi and star of the earlier Evil Dead trilogy, Bruce Campbell are along for the ride as producers. Fede Alvarez, director of the remake is bringing a film with a lot less of the comedy from the previous films and concentrating more on the sheer terror and horror.
What makes the remake even more appealing to horror fans is
the fact that there is going to be NO computer generated effects (CGI) only
practical special effects. This is
interesting because most horror films these days use CGI because it saves time
and money. It's a great sign that the
production companies, Tristar Pictures, FilmDistrict and Ghost House Pictures
have faith in the retelling of this story to put solace in the idea that this
could be a very profitable film in its theatrical run. Unfortunately, Alvarez had to cut out some of
the scenes to get the coveted R-rating from the MPAA in order to show his film
in the theaters. But there is great news
on that topic, imagine how awesome the unrated Blu-ray and DVD are going to be.
On the subject of Raimi actually stepping behind the camera
to film another segment of his Evil Dead
saga, he was recently asked if there was something he rather do and he
responded, “I don’t really have anything else.”
Below is the red band trailer for the upcoming remake, viewer discretion advised.
I have mixed emotions on this. I am excited to see anything Evil Dead, but for me Ash can only be played by Bruce Campbell. This isn't a role that you can place just anyone in, like squeezing some actor into a black rubber Batman mask. Here you go kids, it's George Clooney with bat nipples.
ReplyDeleteThis is Ash we're talking about! All in all, I hope it's gory (red blood, black blood, blue blood, etc). I hope it's funny. I hope it's not too slick over the top Hollywood reheated leftovers. Keep it real, like a low budget- filmed in a gymnasium, in the dead of summer kind of real. Most of all I hope it's scary as hell!
Thanks Dave for the comments. All I can say is that I am very excited to see this film. One of the problems I had with the news of the remake was that a female was going to play the lead. I completely agree Bruce Campbell will always be Ash. But, this female isn't playing the Ash character, so I was more open to it.
ReplyDeleteThe main thing that sold me was the red band trailer and the news of No CGI. I am looking forward to seeing how they pull off some of the gnarly stuff from the trailer with no CGI. There is some over the top bloody scenes and tons of gore so I think it'll be a fun time.
I already bought my tickets for the showing next Thursday, so stay tuned for a review after I see it. Thanks again for the comments.
