Today is the day that many North American horror fans have
been waiting for, the video on demand release of American Mary. American Mary is the much-anticipated film
by the Twisted Twins, Jen and Sylvia Soska.
It is the follow up to their debut feature film Dead Hooker in a Trunk, which they released in 2009.
American Mary first hit the festival circuit in August 2012 at the Film 4 Fright Fest in the United Kingdom. It had the most success at Screamfest LA in October 2012, taking home five awards. It took the award for best picture; Jen and Sylvia took the award for best director; Brian Pearson took the award for best cinematography; Masters FX took the award for best makeup; and Katharine Isabelle took the award for best actress. American Mary has already been released in the United Kingdom, Australia and Germany. It is going to have a limited theatrical run in North America starting May 31, 2013 and it is being released on DVD and Blu-ray on June 18, 2013.
Here are my thoughts on American
Mary. I was super excited to see it because
I'm a huge fan of the work of the Twisted Twins. I have watched their short films and Dead Hooker in a Trunk numerous
times. I feel that American Mary
surpassed my expectations in all areas. It
tells an age-old story of revenge, but tells it in a unique way by using the world
of body modification as the theme. It
was definitely a sight for sore eyes since there are so many horror remakes
coming out. There is no doubt in my mind
that Katharine Isabelle deserved to win the best actress award at Screamfest LA. I have been a fan of hers since I first saw
her Ginger Snaps.
According to Film Deviant, up next for the Twisted
Twins is taking part in the sequel to The
ABC’s of Death. I really enjoyed The ABC’s of Death, and now knowing that
Jen and Sylvia are going to be apart of the sequel, I am counting the days
until it comes out.
