Will the Financial Success of the Evil Dead Remake, Lead to More Remakes?

-->
After my blog about computer-generated effects (CGI), I went out and watched Evil Dead again.  Although there was some CGI in there, I really dug the film even more the second time around.  I am a fan of the majority of the remakes of American horror films, but I feel that Evil Dead is by far the best of the bunch.

It has been doing very well in its theatrical run.  It had a wide release of 3,025 theaters on April 5th, in the United States.  As of May 8th, it has grossed over $53 million domestically and over another $23 million worldwide.  Since it had an estimated production budget of $17 million, that’s comes to an estimated worldwide net profit of $59.5 million.

With that kind of profit, it’s no surprise that Ghost House Pictures is planning a sequel.  Sam Raimi, director of the original and producer of the remake, is considering the possibility of making a sequel to Army of Darkness.  Also with these profits the possibility of another remake is back in development.  I am talking about the remake of Clive Barker’s 1987 classic Hellraiser.

The rumors started swirling back in 2006 of the possible remake.  Pascal Laugier was attached to direct, but he left the production citing creative differences.  In 2010, Todd Farmer was brought in to write the script while Patrick Lussier was brought into direct.  These are the two men responsible for the successful My Bloody Valentine remake.  However as of 2012, the Hellraiser remake has been on the back burner, but rumors are starting to swirl that it may actually be coming soon than you think.

The way I see it, Hollywood as already remade some of the greatest American horror films of the past with great success.  I don’t think they’ll be stopping anytime soon, so why not go ahead and make another classic in Hellraiser?
